HELLO
I'm Cheryl, a food lover who loves to bake and share my baking with friends and family.I am an engineer by day and a baker by night (and lots of weekends). For me engineering and baking go hand in hand as both are about getting the basics right. Once those are in place you are free to be creative as possible with your bakes and still get tasty results.
If looking at spices or fresh fruit sparks a creative idea in you for a new dish or you’re wondering what to do with all those strawberries you bought, this site is for you. You’ll get ideas for trying your favorite foods or new foods in new ways. I get excited when I see seasonal berries, apples or vegetables and start thinking about all the dishes I can create and I’m sharing those ideas with you.
You’ll find updates for some of my favorite classics like pound cake or muffins, but if like me you like trying or learning new things and have a little more time on your hand you’ll find ideas for desserts using puff pastry.
In 2018 I was a baker on season 4 of the Great American Baking Show. It was an amazing and sometimes stressful opportunity. Not only did I get to experience this once in a lifetime event, but I made some wonderful new friends too.
I have a lot of connections. I am a wife, daughter, sister, step-mom, niece, aunt, friend, neighbor, co-worker and now a food blogger. But my most important relationship is with God. My husband Wade is my best friend, biggest supporter and booster. He is always willing to help me in the kitchen by being my main taste tester. I can always count on him to give me honest feedback.
My love for baking comes from my mother who made delicious cakes, cookies, pies and other sweet treats. My mom was known for her pies, whether sweet or savory in large part because of her amazingly flaky crust. Whether she made a chicken pot pie or a peach cobbler it was always a race to get a corner piece, the piece with the most crust.
ABOUT BAKES BY BROWN SUGAR
So why a food blog? I love sharing food with others. Food brings people together, even donuts at a morning work meeting. I started out sharing pictures of my bakes on Instagram and sometimes the story that came with the treat. After reading the food blogs of others I decided that I wanted to share my recipes and what I learned while baking or cooking. Bakes by Brown Sugar is my first food blog and I am excited to launch this new venture and share it with you. I hope you like the recipes and come back for more.
I am a self-taught baker and all my recipes are made from scratch with seasonal ingredients (though I do freeze a lot of fruit during the summer). The recipes are my own creation unless otherwise noted. I provide details and information that I hope will be helpful as you try one of the recipes. I'll share the things that I have learned (and sometimes the mistakes) in the process of testing the recipes.
I would love to hear from you. Get in touch by commenting or writing to me through the Contact tab. Feel free to ask questions and I hope you will leave some a comment when you try a recipe. Since I am just starting out I would especially love feedback if you find a mistake. If you do try a recipe and post it to Instagram use the hashtag #bakesbybrownsugar and tag me @brownsugarandbutter so I can see what you made.
