About Cheryl Norris
I created Bakes by Brown Sugar food blog to share my joy of baking and to offer you a trusted and knowledgeable baking resource.
I am a recipe developer and food photographer. I want to inspire home bakers who love to bake and want to level up their baking skills. Baking has always been a passion of mine, starting with what I learned from my mother and I’m excited to share that passion with you.
Originality and Creativity
I'm a self-taught baker, which means my journey has been a delicious mix of hands-on experimentation, poring over countless cookbooks, and even venturing into formal baking classes to refine my skills. Through this blend of learning, I've cultivated a deep understanding of baking fundamentals and a passion for developing unique and approachable recipes.
I have created every one of the original recipes published on this site and personally tested them, typically multiple times. I never copy/paste from other sites, or publish AI-generated recipes or blog posts.
Transparency
If a Bakes by Brown Sugar recipe was inspired by a recipe authored by another creator — a celebrity chef, cookbook author, culinary expert, or website like America’s Test Kitchen— I explain its origins. That includes crediting the source and providing the appropriate links.
In the same spirit, I want to be upfront about any affiliate links or sponsored content on the blog. I'll clearly disclose if I partner with a brand or recommend a product. My goal is to share my love of baking with you, and that includes being honest and authentic in everything I do.
Recipe Testing
As a recipe developer and someone passionate about helping others bake successfully, I am committed to thoroughly testing my recipes at least twice before publishing them, writing detailed instructions, and providing photographs for accuracy and precision. I use widely available kitchen equipment that is easily accessible to home bakers.
I use a digital scale to measure the weight of ingredients such as flour, measuring cups for the volume of liquid ingredients, measuring spoons for smaller amounts such as salt and baking powder, and timers for calculating cooking times.
My recipes are written clearly and concisely, easy to follow and reliably reproduce.
Photography
High-quality photos of the process and finished recipe are essential for each recipe.
I photograph the recipe steps and capture images of the finished recipe in my home studio. I use a digital SLR camera, styling the photo to highlight the qualities of every dessert or baked good. I use natural light or artificial light depending on the time of the year and day
My photos are not artificially enhanced or digitally altered, other than to adjust brightness, contrast, and sharpness.
Community Engagement
Baking is all about sharing and community. The comment section on Bakes by Brown Sugar Food is a forum for users to ask questions or share their experiences with fellow home bakers. Users are strongly encouraged to upload their photos to share.
All comments are moderated. No one is perfect: Critical comments are welcome when stated clearly, with specific references to confusing or seemingly inaccurate information.
